Dear IXDA:

Congratulations on the upcoming IXDA in Outer Space event coming up. It is a timely theme, and I wish participants success. I have been a lifelong (60 years' fan of sci-fi and organized two plenary panels on "HCI and Sci-Fi" at CHI 92 and by invitation at CHI 99. I have been recently active in this area for about three years and have organized/am organizing many events and publications related to this theme. If you are interested, please keep the following summary info in mind, as circulated on my IXDA blog, AM+A blog, AM+A News, and elsewhere:

At the UXPA national conference in Washington, DC, 11 July  2013, Aaron Marcus will offer an invited workshop, "The Past 100 Years of the Future: UX in Science-Fiction Movies and TV" based on his past keynotes in Germany and China on this theme at Mensch und Komputer 2010 (500 people) and UXPA/China/UserFriendly 2012 in Beijing (700 people). He has also given tutorials on this topic at APCHI12 in Japan and the upcoming HCII13 conference in Las Vegas in July 2013. Mr. Marcus is also lead co-editor of a special issue of User Experience Magazine, the member publication of the User-Experience Professionals Association, which will publish 13:2, a specially themed issue about UX and Science Fiction. Mr. Marcus also published a free, downloadeable  AM+A ebook, The Past 100 Years of the Future: Human-Computer Interaction in Science-Fiction Movies and Television, which AM+A published in August 2012: and a short article on this theme in UX 11:3, pp. 30-31,  "Back to the Future: UX in the Past 100 Years of Science Fiction", another of Aaron Marcus' On the Edge column's essays. That article is viewable and downloadable for members at the UXPA Website: August Interactions Magazine, published by ACM SIGCHI, will also have an article by Mr. Marcus on this topic.

I hope this above info will be of interest to participants, especially the link to download the free ebook.

I wish you success with the event and might see some of you there, if circumstances permit.

Sincerely, Aaron (,, 510-601-0994, in Berkeley, CA)

Hi Maria, thanks for the message! Yes I'm a student at Tech, I've been out in SF for internships the last few summers. I hope I'll get a chance to meet you at a future event.
