For product design, my recommendation is The Simplicity Shift by Scott Jenson. You can download the full pdf at http://www.jensondesign.com/download.html
Another good one that really explains "the process" of analyzing you personas is About Face by Alan Cooper. It also has a lot of specific design principles with visual examples.
The Design of Everyday Things is definitely a great book as well, but it discusses critique more than design.
I hope that helps. I'm not sure what kind of product you're interested in, but the general design principles are fairly versatile.
