Description
Dan and Jo will speak about how silos, hierarchies, and corporate jargon have created soulless environments in which people no longer speak with and learn from each other, but simply implement at a relentless pace to meet measures and growth targets. This reality is having drastically unhealthy effects on people, teams, businesses, and societies where people do not feel connected to a meaningful story. People are in effect sleepwalking.
So what is the alternative and what does a more enlightened and healthier future look like? We will explore and challenge our current notions of success and the way we work, and look at the human qualities, nutrients, tools, and project experiments that help people to work—and live—well. We need to give back permission to people to design their own cultures and open up opportunities for themselves and the people they work with.
Dan Szuc is a Principal Consultant at Apogee, as well as the co-founder of the UX Hong Kong conference. Previously, he worked on a usability team for Telstra Australia. He has been involved in the UX field for 20 years and has been based in Hong Kong for the last 15 years. Dan has lectured about usability, user-centered design and user experience in Hong Kong, China, Singapore, Malaysia, Australia, the US, New Zealand, Canada, and Japan. He co-wrote The Usability Kit, an implementation guide providing best practices and guidelines for usability teams, and holds a BS in Information Management from Melbourne University in Australia. Dan Szuc was the Vice President of the UXPA International and is also on the Editorial Advisors Board of Rosenfeld Media. Dan recently published the book Global UX with Whitney Quesenbery.
Jo Wong is co-founder of Apogee and a Design Researcher with over 15 years of experience. She grew up in a multi-cultured environment—born in China, with a Chinese Burmese father and Chinese Indonesian mother—and grew up in Hong Kong from the age of six. She experienced the changes in Hong Kong, from when it was a British colony, and during Hong Kong’s handover back to Mainland China. Jo studied in Australia, holds a Bachelors' of Social Science Information Management, and has worked on projects in different cities in China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and other nearby regions, and has collaborated with teams from different companies in different parts of the world. Jo is passionate about the environment, our physical and mental health, current political and economic systems, and how we can live healthier and happier lives and, at the same time, prevent damaging the world we live in and adversely affecting less fortunate people.
